Bank of Ulster began issuing its last polymer note on June 15, 2022.

The new post focuses on North Ireland industry, including aerospace, shipbuilding, flax mills and the film industry. The note design features the achievements of the women of Northern Ireland with astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell discovery of growing pulsars. The note also features women working in the life sciences sector in Northern Ireland and the “thousands”, the women who worked in the laundry industry in Northern Ireland. The other side features the flora and fauna found in Northern Ireland.

Terry Robbhead of retail banking in Northern Ireland, said:

“We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of customers switching to digital transactions, but banknotes continue to be an important part of how many people interact with us. We’re really proud to present this latest bold new design. .

“The new polymer banknotes last two and a half times longer than traditional cotton banknotes, making them more durable and environmentally friendly. Their advanced security features also make it easier for customers to protect themselves against fraud. »

The work was designed by Oh street and passed to From the streetwho converted the artwork into a functional design, created the banknote, then printed it on SAFEGUARD® polymer substrate.

Tickets use portrait orientation with enhanced security features, including two windows, a De La Rue holographic strip that secures both sides of the ticket with advanced technology DEPTH™ and PUREIMAGE™ effects, Improved GEMINI™ print function and a touch embossing function, enabling physical identification for the visually impaired. New £50 follows the launch of the £5, £10 and £20 polymer banknotes launched in 2019 and 2020.

Ruth EulingChief Executive and Managing Director of Currency said:

It’s a ‘pretty piece of paper’ that represented a life-changing sum of money when it rolled out of the printers 150 years ago, belonged to one of New Zealand’s first bankers and went later changing hands at auction for nearly $100,000.

When silver dealer Joshua Lee added the £100 BNZ printer’s proof specimen to his collection this year, it was initially with the intention of returning it for profit.

But the 20-year-old, who turned his hobby of collecting coins and banknotes into small business Aventine Numismatics last year, realized he couldn’t quite part with his new addition.

“I found myself reluctant to list it. The reality is that I have to consider one day if I should sell. I’m in business so I can’t keep it all – if I was a millionaire I would still keep it.

“This is my favorite item in my collection so far. It’s irreplaceable, and it’s highly likely that I’ll never see anything like it again.”

Before the Reserve Bank was created in 1934 and started printing its own banknotes, commercial banks created their own, including the third £100 note issued by BNZ between 1873 and 1899.

The banknote was printed in black on a white background, with its denomination on a brown panel in the center, and with two medallions showing scenes including Māori, a smoking volcano, and a kiwi.

It was the highest denomination issued in New Zealand, Lee said, with a face value equivalent to around $15,000 in 2022, according to the Reserve Bank’s inflation calculator.

At the time of publication, the average salary of a kauri digger was around £2 per week ($312 in 2022), while a jeweler could expect to earn around £3 per week ($469) . A six-bedroom house in Auckland costs £31 to £46 a year to rent ($4,800 to $7,000).

Lee’s specimen note was never in circulation, but among those printed for banks around the world to verify that all £100 BNZ notes presented to them were genuine.

It was previously owned by Falconer Larkworthy, a leading New Zealand economic development figure who helped BNZ compete for gold business after the bank was established in 1861, and later managed BNZ’s London base.

Larkworthy may have acquired the specimen notes during a visit to the bank’s printers, or received them as a souvenir, said Rob Pepping, a New Zealand author and banknote and coin expert.

Banknotes were the preferred currency in the Otago gold fields, where theft was a problem, Pepping said.

“Miners didn’t like sovereigns (coins). They liked banknotes because they could bend them and hide them on their person. ‘era.”

Lee isn’t sure how the banknote specimen left Larkworthy or his descendants’ possession, but his story included a staggering sale of 85,000 Australian dollars ($94,000 New Zealand dollars) by the Rare Coin Company in 2013.

He wouldn’t say how much he paid for the specimen banknote, but if he ever sold it, he didn’t expect to catch a sale price for the 2013 transaction, which came at a time when there was a strong demand for New Zealand collectibles. and Australian coins and banknotes.

There were eight specimen £100 BNZs like Lee’s, while only one previously circulating £100 BNZ note remained in private hands, along with around 50 of the notes held by the Reserve Bank, Pepping said.

Due to the face value of the banknotes, the original owners did not keep them – the only privately owned banknote was found inside a piece of furniture in the 1970s or 1980s.

“It wasn’t something people would put in their Bibles and not use. It was worth so much…it would have bought you a house.”

Subscribe to Premium

In 2022, the specimen currently in Lee’s collection is unlikely to provide him with a home.

But that could be a good chunk of a house deposit – if he can bring himself to click through a listing on an auction website.

“A few people said, ‘you’re only 20, you need the money, sell it’. But I can’t.”

Until he’s ready to sell, Lee enjoys digging into the history of the note – much of which has remained unknown and which he considered the most interesting aspect of his hobby-turned-vocation.

“In a way, it’s about the story. It’s the story behind that pretty piece of paper that intrigues people.”

A charity shop in Essex has discovered a rare foreign banknote which has been sold online for £140,000 – 1,400 times more than its original value. Paul Wyman was volunteering at the Oxfam branch in Brentwood when he noticed a strange banknote in a bundle of donated goods, reports the Mirror.

The £100 Palestinian pound was given to high officials during the British Mandate in Palestine in 1927 and is one of less than ten that should exist. Paul, who located the note, opted not to put it on the shelves and instead called an auction company, who valued it at £30,000.

When it went under the hammer at London’s Spink auction house, it sold for a whopping £140,000. Paul said: “I realized I was holding something incredibly rare in my hands.

“I couldn’t believe it when it cost £140,000.” The note was delivered to the store by a mysterious donor in October 2020, and it was appraised at an auction house in February 2022.

Paul watched the auction online from his home in April. He said: “The auctioneers originally valued it at £30,000 and I was already amazed – let alone £140,000.

“Until then, I don’t think I really believed it could be a real note because they’re so incredibly rare.” However, bidders from around the world, including the United States and the Middle East, submitted bids in hopes of getting the mark.

The money the ticket was sold for will go to Oxfam charity work. Paul said: “It’s great to know I’ve been instrumental in raising so much money for Oxfam’s work helping the poorest people in the world.”

Elaine Fung, banknote specialist for Spink, said, “Less than ten of these notes are known to exist. They were said to have been issued to a high-ranking official at the time as a token of appreciation for their services.”

Lorna Fallon, Oxfam’s retail director, said: ‘We are so grateful to Paul and the team at the Brentwood shop for spotting this banknote, not to mention the generous member of the public who gave us donated it. “We are delighted the note has raised so much money for Oxfam’s work around the world, which includes helping people in East Africa at risk of starvation and helping refugees from Ukraine. .”

If you’re not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should watch out for. First, we would like to identify a growth come back on capital employed (ROCE) and at the same time, a base capital employed. If you see this, it usually means it’s a company with a great business model and lots of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after briefly looking at the numbers, we don’t think Ticket Pollard (TSE:PBL) has the makings of a multi-bagger in the future, but let’s see why it might be.

What is return on capital employed (ROCE)?

If you’ve never worked with ROCE before, it measures the “yield” (pre-tax profit) a company generates from the capital used in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Pollard Banknote:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets – Current Liabilities)

0.065 = C$24 million ÷ (C$462 million – C$93 million) (Based on the last twelve months to March 2022).

So, Pollard Banknote has a ROCE of 6.5%. In absolute terms, this is a weak return and it is also below the hotel industry average of 8.7%.

In the chart above, we measured Pollard Banknote’s past ROCE against its past performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you’re interested, you can check out analyst forecasts in our free analyst forecast report for the company.

What can we say about the Pollard Banknote ROCE trend?

On the surface, the ROCE trend at Pollard Banknote does not inspire confidence. About five years ago, the return on capital was 15%, but since then it has fallen to 6.5%. Meanwhile, the company is using more capital, but that hasn’t changed much in terms of sales over the past 12 months, so that could reflect longer-term investments. It may take some time before the company begins to see a change in the income from these investments.

The basics of Pollard Banknote’s ROCE

In summary, Pollard Banknote is reinvesting funds into the business for growth, but unfortunately it appears sales haven’t grown much yet. Yet for long-term shareholders, the stock has offered them an incredible 110% return over the past five years, so the market appears to be optimistic about its future. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continues, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here is not high.

Pollard Banknote does come with some risks though, and we have spotted 3 warning signs for Pollard Banknote that might interest you.

The government, led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, recently made a deliberate political decision to print a $2,000 note bearing the images, side by side, of former prime ministers Michael Manley and Edward Seaga.

No matter how the Honorable Nigel Clarke, Minister for Finance and Public Services, who made the announcement in Parliament, tries to spin it, the main purpose of combining the two images is to continue the relentless campaign to try to popularize the unpopular. The campaign is specifically aimed at capturing the imagination of the younger generation who may not be aware of the political activism of the two men.

Michael Manley won national elections in 1972, 1976 and 1989. He lost in 1980 to Mr. Seaga. He did not contest the 1983 elections because the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) failed to honor an agreement that no election would be called until the voters list was properly updated to include new potential voters.

Mr. Seaga’s victory in the 1980 elections had two main features, hitherto foreign to Jamaican politics. First, it was, and to date, the most violent campaign and election the country has ever seen. Of 800 people killed that year, 600 were killed as a result of election-related violence. Second, the election campaign saw the involvement of international forces, particularly the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who were determined to oust Manley from power.

Mr Seaga lost national elections in 1976, 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2002, much to the chagrin of young Turks of the JLP era who subsequently campaigned for him to step down from the JLP leadership. and that he be replaced by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

Every poll conducted by respected pollsters, and in particular Carl Stone’s revered polls, has had Michael Manley “donkey length” ahead of Mr Seaga when it comes to who the Jamaican people most loved and admired.

Michael Manley died on March 6, 1997 and, in a Stone poll conducted in the gleaner from March 17, 1997, it showed that 67.9% of Jamaicans thought he should be made a national hero.

In the December 2000 Stone Organization poll, when asked which prime minister had done the most to improve the lot of the people, 54% answered Manley.

Michael Manley’s popularity has been captured yet again in a poll in the gleaner of March 16, 2006, nine years after his death, which showed that 49% of people said that of the six prime ministers so far, he was the best. Michael Manley edged his nearest rival by 34%.

All of these polls were taken when Mr Seaga was still very active in national politics, as leader of the JLP and leader of the opposition. As Mr Seaga lost election after election, the people were still in deep admiration for Michael Manley.

CAMPAIGN TO DISCREDIT MANLEY

After Mr. Seaga retired from active politics, he spent most of his years promoting the myth that Michael Manley destroyed Jamaica and that he, Seaga, was the country’s savior in 1980 when he won the election, and pulled the country off the path it had embarked on under Manley.

If Manley destroyed the country and saved it, why was he so often rejected by the people at the polls? He won only one national election, out of the six in which he took part. If Manley destroyed the country and he saved it, why did Manley beat him in every national poll, when compared? If Manley destroyed the country and saved it, why on earth would the government want to put both on the same dollar bill? Is the idea to save Manley?

The planned printing of the $2,000 bill with Manley and Seaga appearing side by side is a brazen attempt by the current administration, led by its mentee, our Prime Minister, to present the two gentlemen as equals, while in the spirit of the Jamaican people, they are unequal.

The JLP, over the years, has tried to position Mr. Seaga as the best economic director the country has ever had. When examined, however, this argument falls flat.

Listen to Timothy Ashby, then director of the Mexico and Caribbean Basin Bureau of the United States Department of Commerce, assess Mr. Seaga after his election defeat in 1989. Ashby said: “Despite a billion (dollars) in United States and the close friendship of the (Ronald) Regan administration, Edward Seaga failed to transform the Jamaican economy for more than eight years in office….GDP per capita remained unchanged from to 1980 when foreign debt had more than doubled, leaving Jamaica one of the most indebted countries per capita. The Jamaican dollar had fallen 300% against the US dollar… Nearly a quarter of the Jamaican workforce remained unemployed.

This assessment of Mr. Seaga’s economic performance during his tenure as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1989 should be viewed in the context of Mr. Manley’s tenure as Prime Minister from 1972 to 1980. Manley, he was constantly challenged by local and international forces that opposed him and his policies, moreover, he also had to go through the oil crisis of 1973, the world recession of 1973 to 1975 and the second oil crisis from 1979.

MANLEY’S SUPPORT

Michael Manley’s support, then and now, grew out of his politics of humanity which led to the awakening of people’s awareness locally. This resulted in the introduction of a series of programs that have improved the quality of life for our people, many of whom now hold important positions in Jamaica.

Like Mr. Seaga, Manley was a nationalist, but he was also a regionalist, which Mr. Seaga does not appear to have been. Mr. Manley, along with other political leaders such as Errol Barrow of Barbados, Forbes Burnham of Guyana, Vere Bird of Antigua and Barbuda and Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago, was an enthusiastic and active supporter of the regional national movement. Manley was also easily recognizable on the world stage as a spokesperson for third-word issues.

Mr Manley’s huge support locally, regionally and internationally, compared to Mr Seaga’s low turnout in all three categories, has forced his ardent supporters in government to try to find ways to keep Mr Seaga at the center of national attention. His appearance with Manley on the banknote is another such attempt.

Those who would like to list what they consider to be Mr. Seaga’s overall accomplishments are free to do so. Those who think it should be on a banknote are also free to do so. I would say to them, feel free to put Mr. Seaga on the $2,000 bill, but please leave Mr. Manley on the $1,000 bill. That’s where he’s been for years.

The attempt to use Manley’s image, to try to promote another’s, in a situation where he and the other were poles apart, is not only a disservice and disrespect to two men, but it is also a slap in the face to people here and abroad who are not in favor of this move by the government.
